Faletau returns as Gatland makes two changes for vital Italy clash
Taulupe Faletau makes his return to the Wales starting XV for the Six Nations 2025 clash away to Italy.

Taulupe Faletau has returned to the starting line-up as one of two changes head coach Warren Gatland has made for Wales’ huge Six Nations game away to Italy on Saturday.

The number eight had been struggling with a knee issue but has been passed fit and replaces Aaron Wainwright in the back row.

Elsewhere, Eddie James is in for the injured Owen Watkin and will make his first international start in Rome.

Wainwright, who suffered a facial injury in Paris as Wales were thrashed 43-0 in their tournament opener against France, starts on the bench, while Leicester Tigers flanker Tommy Reffell is the surprise omission from the 23-man squad.

James’ three previous Wales caps all came from the bench, but the Scarlets man is now in line for a starting berth alongside Saracens’ Nick Tompkins in the centre.

Ben Thomas retains his place at fly-half, with Josh Adams and Tom Rogers on the left and right wings respectively, and veteran Liam Williams at full-back.

Wales were blown away in the Stade de France in the first game of the 2025 Six Nations, suffering their 13th consecutive Test defeat and finishing a game pointless for the first time since 1998.

Gatland’s side now take on Italy looking for a first Six Nations victory since winning in Rome in round four of the 2023 tournament.

Gatland said: “This has been an important week with a lot of hard work put in during training.

“We want to be accurate and disciplined on Saturday. It’s about our execution and how we manage the game.

“We know Italy are a quality side with physical players and are looking forward to a good contest. We’re excited for the challenge on Saturday.”
